Aetna Coverage Availability & Fees
When considering your dental insurance, it’s important to understand that all plans will by nature look a little different- even those purchased at the same agency, or through the same employer.
Most dental insurance providers off two types of plans: HMO (health maintenance organization) and PPO (preferred provider organization). With PPO plans, you can choose either an in-network or an out-of-network oral surgeon. However, with HMO plans, you will only receive coverage from your plan if you choose an in-network provider.
With PPO plans, you’ll be subject to the following:
- Annual Maximum – This is the maximum dollar amount of coverage your Aetna plan will allow in a calendar year.
- Deductible – This is how much you’ll be responsible for out of pocket before your Aetna dental insurance plan will cover your dental treatments. In most cases, preventive care like your six-month exams and cleanings will be exempt from your deductible.
- Waiting Period – The waiting period is a temporary delay that occurs before your Aetna dental insurance benefits are fully active. In most cases, it is only about two weeks. Thankfully, exams and cleanings are usually exempt from this delay and can be scheduled immediately after enrollment.
With most PPO plans, while you will generally pay a higher premium, you can expect more favorable terms in return. In most cases, dental insurance plans adhere to the following format:
- 100% of the total for two checkups & cleanings each year.
- 80% of the total for any treatment deemed a minor procedure by Aetna and your surgeon.
- 50% of the total for any treatment deemed a major procedure by Aetna and your surgeon.
