Many experts consider dental implants the ideal way to rebuild smiles after tooth loss. Unlike dentures and bridges, they are placed directly in your jaw and eventually fuse with the bone to become a more permanent part of your mouth.

This helps make these replacement teeth more resilient and longer-lasting than alternatives. Furthermore, once you’ve healed, there are very few dietary restrictions because you’re unlikely to dislodge them. With that said, you must choose foods carefully after your procedure to avoid potential side effects. Continue reading to learn more about which ingredients to avoid and which ones are considered safe!

What Foods Should I Avoid After Dental Implant Surgery?

It’s essential that your gums and jaw have ample time to rest and recover following your procedure. Your dentist will likely provide a detailed list of post-operative instructions for you to follow, including dietary restrictions, which are intended to help you heal as quickly and effectively as possible while avoiding potential complications, such as dental implant failure.

For example, to prevent you from pushing or yanking your restoration out of place, your provider might ask that you steer clear of anything too hard, crunchy, spicy, or sticky. Snacks like candy, nuts, or hard fruits and vegetables might destabilize it or dislodge it altogether.

What Foods are Safe Following My Procedure?

In the first 24 hours, it’s best to stick to a diet of cool liquids, because anything too hot or acidic can harm the blood clot that must form for your gums to mend. You may also want to avoid spicy foods that can trigger additional aches or irritation in your already-tender teeth and connective tissues.

Then, after that, you can enjoy softer meals that don’t require much biting or chewing, but which contain nutrients your body needs to fully recover. Popular choices include yogurt, cooked eggs, blended fruit smoothies, softly steamed or boiled vegetables, applesauce, and mashed potatoes.

When Can I Resume Eating More Solid Foods?

It’s natural to wonder how long you should wait before eating more solid foods after dental implant placement. The answer can vary from person to person because it’s based on your individual circumstances, but many patients are able to reintroduce easily chewable solid foods, like cooked pasta, fish, chicken, or soft fruits (like bananas), within the first couple of weeks.

Then, you can usually gradually start eating harder foods again as you feel ready and able to. If you’re unsure whether you’ve healed sufficiently to eat more normally, your dentist can provide answers that take your unique circumstances into account!
